Slot volatility explained: low, medium and high
· 4 min read
Volatility, sometimes called variance, describes how a slot spreads its payouts. RTP tells you how much a slot pays back in total; volatility tells you how that money arrives: in many small wins or in a few big ones.
Low, medium and high volatility
- Low volatility: frequent small wins, a balance that moves slowly, rarely a huge hit.
- Medium volatility: a mix of regular wins and the occasional bigger bonus round.
- High volatility: long stretches with little, then the chance of a very large win, often in the bonus round.
Volatility is not the same as RTP
Every Volthouse slot has a 96% RTP, yet they play very differently. A high volatility slot can go a long time without a bonus and then pay hundreds of times your bet in one round. A lower volatility slot keeps you spinning with smaller wins along the way.
Which volatility suits you?
If you want long sessions on a small budget, pick lower volatility and a smaller bet. If you are chasing a big win and accept that the budget can run out quickly, high volatility is built for that. Either way, decide your budget before the first spin.
Each slot shows its volatility, RTP and maximum win on its start screen, so you can compare them before you play.
Bonus buy and volatility
Buying the bonus round skips the wait for scatters, but it concentrates the volatility: you pay a large price for one feature that can pay a lot or a little. The return of a bought bonus is about the same as normal play, so it changes the ride, not the odds.
